OUSU Council has voted to oppose the invite of Nick Griffin and David Irving to the Oxford Union
The first week meeting of OUSU Council saw Common Room Representatives, delegates and OUSU Exec members vote to oppose the invite of David Irving and Nick Griffin to the Oxford Union.
The motion also pledged OUSU’s support to the work of groups such as the Union of Jewish Students, NUS and others in their work to campaign and lobby against the invitation.
Speaking during the meeting, OUSU President Martin McCluskey said: ” There are students in this room now who will support this motion on the basis that they do not want to be harassed or intimidated by these men or any of their followers. There are students in this room whose race, ethnicity or sexuality has been verbally attacked by Irving and Griffin in the past and they do not once again want to be attacked in their own city. And also, there are students in this room who will not want the name of Oxford to be associated with these men or their views and who will not want the reputation of this University to lend them respectability.”
