Becky Howe, OUSU's President

Hello and welcome to Oxford!

Dearest Freshers,

I'm Becky, and this year I'm the President of Oxford University Student Union (OUSU). You may have seen me and the rest of our full-time officer team in Fresh! magazine. I've just finished my undergrad degree, in History, at Pembroke and now I work for you.

As a student at Oxford Uni, you automatically become a member of OUSU. Our main functions are to represent student voices to the University, lobby for the changes you want to see and support your Junior Common Room and Middle Common Room in any way that we can. OUSU has some amazing student-led campaigns, and an independent advice service for anything you might need help with.

Need advice?

OUSU runs the Student Advice Service — a free, confidential and impartial service, available to all Oxford students. The Service can help you with academic, welfare and accommodation issues and lots of other things that might affect your student life. Need further advice? Make an appointment to see an Advisor via email to advice@ousu.ox.ac.uk or by phone 01865 288466. We also run drop-in sessions during term time at the following times: Monday 10am-12 noon, Wednesday 12-2pm and Friday 2-4pm.

Useful things to know:

  • OUSU sell great quality bike lock and lights, at a discounted price.
  • If you ever need a taxi but have no cash call 001 taxis and tell them you want to use the OUSU taxi safety scheme (you'll need your Bod Card with you). Once you're safely home, OUSU will invoice you the next day for your ride and you simply come along to OUSU to pay the fare.
  • OUSU has a new subscription for online voting platform Mi-Voice. All student groups, including common rooms, societies, campaigns, and departments are welcome to use Mi-Voice for free. To gain access to the software, please contact OUSU’s Democratic Support Officer at dso@ousu.ox.ac.ukPlease note OUSU will set up accounts and respond to any queries, but will not administer elections. Students are to take full full responsibility for the outcome of their own elections.
  • OUSU's Refreshers' Fair is this Friday. Anyone with a Bod card can come along to Exam Schools from 10am-3pm and see the wealth of clubs and societies available for you to get involved in.
  • Interested in shaping how your student union works? We currently have a vacancy for a Student Trustee,to join us from October 19th until December 6th 2015. If you would like to get a flavour of how your student union works and to gain experience of sitting on the Board of Trustees for a charity, then apply now.
